What is Parts work?
As children we each experiened more than we could process, and the pain we couldn’t yet digest gets tucked away inside, forming our wounded parts, called exiles. To keep that pain out of reach so we can keep going, other parts step in as protectors, building strategies to shield us: the inner critic, the people-pleaser, the one who numbs out or works too hard. They’ve been doing a hard job for a very long time and they are most often exhausted.
As adults, we can finally welcome home the exiles we didn’t know how to embrace. Parts work is a gentle, body-based process of getting to know and heal those exiled parts, and of understanding the protectors that carried us this far so they can at last rest. Underneath it all is your Self: calm, curious, and already whole. We move slowly, at the pace your nervous system can trust. You come exactly as you are, all your parts included.
IFS gives us something precious: a way to turn toward our exiles and protectors with curiosity instead of fear, to unblend from the parts that have been running the show, and to learn to lead from Self.

My Journey with parts work
My journey with parts work began when I needed more than my somatic training to manage major anxiety and panic attacks related to health issues I was dealing with. I was blown away by how helpful learning to unblend from my panicing parts was. They would take over and all of my tools were useless when I had a panic attack. I felt stuck and scared. I made time to sit every day and connect with Self until my panicing parts started trusting me and allowed me to hold them. Learning to unblend was such a foundational part of learning self regulation for me, and it’s only deepened. Unblending is seperating Self from the wounded parts that are taking over your body. It allows you to get enough space from the wounded part to regulate and hold it rather than having it drive you, giving that part what it longs for.

To deepen my understanding of parts work, my husband and I formed a study group of the book Self Therapy by Jay Earley, Ph.D. using the meet up platform. Half the study group were therapists that wanted to study IFS more deeply without the high cost of IFS certification. That was a real boon to our education, as they brought their knowledge and expertise, carrying between 10 to 20 years of experience each. That original study group has evolved over time to integrate family constellations into our parts work, and that has taken our parts work to the next level of healing and integration.
I gained the confidence to teach this work to others, and a deeper understanding of the niche that was not being filled. There’s a gap between the work we do with our therapists and the deeper, ongoing, daily work of rewiring our nervous systems and befriending on parts when we are not with our therapists. We need campouts, gatherings, practice groups where we build our IFS community.
Where Parts Work Leads
Once you can reliably find Self, soothe your own system, and step back from a wounded part instead of becoming it, something new becomes possible: you can lean toward your growing edges instead of away from them. The very steadiness IFS builds — that internal safety — is exactly what you need to go where most seekers never go.
That somewhere is Self Sovereignty.
It’s what happens when you’re ready to meet the parts you’re certain you could never be: the controller, the manipulator, the one who wants to harm. It asks you to stay in discomfort, to be humbled, to tell the truth even when it costs you. And you can only do that once you can bring your own safety with you wherever you go.
That’s the natural arc: unblending builds resilience, resilience becomes courage, and courage lets you turn toward your shadow — until what you once feared becomes a source of energy, sovereignty, and freedom you carry everywhere.
If parts work has given you a felt relationship with your inner world, you may be closer to this next step than you think.
